NIGERIA, GHANA STRENGTHEN BILATERAL MARITIME COOPERATION FOR REGIONAL SECURITY, TRADE
Nigeria and Ghana have agreed to deepen bilateral maritime cooperation, focusing on enhanced security, trade facilitation, and sustainable development of shared ocean resources.
The commitment was reaffirmed during high-level talks between officials of both countries, where they emphasised joint efforts to combat piracy, illegal fishing, and other maritime crimes in the Gulf of Guinea. Both nations pledged to improve information sharing, joint patrols, and capacity building for naval and maritime agencies.
Trade and economic ties were also prioritised, with discussions centred on streamlining port operations, harmonising regulatory frameworks, and promoting intra-African trade under the AfCFTA. Officials highlighted the strategic importance of the maritime domain to both economies, noting its role in energy transportation, fisheries, and blue economy initiatives.
Experts welcomed the move, describing it as a model for regional collaboration that could enhance stability and economic integration in West Africa. The two countries committed to regular high-level engagements and technical working groups to fast-track implementation of agreed initiatives.
The deepening partnership is expected to yield benefits in maritime safety, environmental protection, and economic growth for both nations and the broader sub-region.
