Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has opened up on his decision to represent Nigeria at the international level instead of Germany.

In an interview with SportyTV, the 26-year-old also reflected on his time playing in Italy, describing it as a rewarding phase of his career.

Now in his third season with Udinese Calcio, Okoye expressed satisfaction with life at the club, noting that he feels settled and fulfilled.

“I’m very happy here,” he said. “It’s my third season already, and I’m having a great time.”

The goalkeeper also praised the consistent support he receives from Nigerian fans, despite playing club football abroad. He emphasized how their encouragement has been a constant source of motivation throughout his journey—from his early days at Fortuna Düsseldorf, through his time at Sparta Rotterdam, and now in Udine.

“It means a lot that Nigerians always support you,” Okoye said. “They’ve been there from the beginning, and I’m very grateful for that support.”

Looking ahead, Okoye highlighted his personal ambition to keep improving and contribute to his team’s success, expressing his desire to help the club finish the season on a strong note.

“As an athlete, I want to get the best out of myself,” he added. “With this club, I want to finish the season as high as possible, and then we take it step by step.”

The former Sparta Rotterdam shot-stopper also spoke about his deep connection to Nigeria, crediting his upbringing and his father’s influence for instilling a strong sense of identity.

“I grew up in Germany, but my father played a big role in my early life,” he said. “I carry a lot of Nigeria in me, and I’m very proud of that.”

On his international allegiance, Okoye revealed that choosing Nigeria was never in doubt, despite his involvement with German youth teams.

“I always knew I wanted to play for Nigeria,” he said. “When the opportunity came, I saw it as a dream, and I was grateful to fulfill it.”

Okoye has been named in the 23-man squad for upcoming international friendlies against Iran and Jordan, scheduled to take place in Antalya later this month.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
