NIGERIA DEPLOYS TROOPS TO BENIN REPUBLIC TO SUPPORT ANTI-TERRORISM EFFORTS — ARMY CHIEF
The Chief of Army Staff has said that Nigeria has deployed troops to the Republic of Benin as part of efforts to support regional operations aimed at tackling terrorism and improving border security in West Africa.
He made the disclosure while speaking on ongoing military cooperation between Nigeria and neighbouring countries in the fight against insurgency and cross-border threats.
According to him, the deployment is part of a broader regional security collaboration involving Nigeria and other West African states to address the movement of armed groups and strengthen stability across shared borders.
The Army Chief noted that terrorism and related security challenges in the region require joint action, especially given the porous nature of borders in parts of West Africa, which allows for the movement of militants and illegal arms.
He added that Nigerian troops working with regional forces are focused on improving surveillance, intelligence sharing, and coordinated operations to disrupt criminal networks operating across borders.
Military cooperation between Nigeria and Benin Republic has grown in recent years as both countries continue to face security pressures linked to extremist groups and transnational crime in the region.
Security officials say such deployments are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen collective defence mechanisms under regional security frameworks in West Africa.
Further details on the size of the deployment or duration of the mission were not disclosed at the time of the announcement.
