Nigeria’s national electricity grid has received a boost with the addition of 50.4 megawatts (MW), following the commissioning of a new mobile power substation in Eleyele, Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, announced this during the official commissioning on Thursday. The substation, with a capacity of 63 MVA and 132/33 kV, was developed by FGN Power Company in partnership with Siemens Energy of Germany.

According to Adelabu, the project is part of a broader initiative to improve power supply across Nigeria. He explained that the new facility would benefit residents and business owners in key areas of Ibadan, including Apete, Ologuneru, Sango, and surrounding communities.

“This commissioning brings an additional 50.4MW to our national grid,” Adelabu said. “It’s part of a plan to deliver a total of 302.4MW through six mobile substations across the country.”

The minister also revealed that another 50.4MW mobile substation is nearing completion at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

This development comes after the Energy Commission of Nigeria recently stated that the Tinubu administration had already added 2,000MW to the national grid as of June 2025.

Despite these efforts, Nigeria still struggles with power generation that fluctuates between 4,500MW and 5,148MW, serving a population of over 250 million people.

The government, however, says it remains committed to boosting generation and transmission capacity to improve electricity access nationwide.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
