NIGER UNIVERSITY STUDENT FOUND DEAD IN APARTMENT
A 300-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBB), Lapai, Niger State, Kelvin Danlami, was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan in his room in what is suspected to be a case of suicide.
The university management confirmed it is cooperating with the police to ensure a transparent investigation into the incident.
According to the Niger State Police Command spokesperson, Wasiu Abiodun, the incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. on Monday. A neighbour reportedly discovered the student hanging and immediately raised the alarm. He was rushed to Lapai General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Abiodun stated, “On January 19, 2026, at about 10:30 a.m., information indicated that Kelvin Danlami, a student of IBB University, Lapai, was found hanging in his room with a cloth tied to a ceiling fan. One of his neighbours discovered him and raised the alarm. The victim was rushed to the General Hospital, Lapai, where he was confirmed dead.”
He added that police have commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. “Operatives attached to the Lapai Division visited the scene, conducted a preliminary investigation, and contacted the family of the deceased. Further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the reason behind this action,” Abiodun said.
In a statement signed by Deputy Registrar, Information, Baba Akote, the university clarified that it had no involvement in any financial or rental arrangement between the deceased student and his landlord.
The statement cautioned against spreading unverified information and urged students to focus on their academics.
“The University wishes to state clearly that it was not aware of, nor involved in, any financial or rental transactions between the deceased student and the landlord. The matter relates entirely to a private arrangement outside the academic and administrative operations of the institution.
“While awaiting the outcome of a thorough investigation by the relevant security agencies, the University Management cautions against speculation and the dissemination of unverified information that could further traumatise the family, friends, and the University community. We also remind all students that their primary purpose at the institution is to pursue their academic programmes diligently and responsibly,” the statement read.
The university reiterated that it is working closely with the police to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
