NIGER STATE LAWMAKERS PUSH TO BAN “SIGN-OUT” CELEBRATIONS IN SCHOOLS
Niger Assembly Seeks Ban on ‘Sign-Out’ Celebrations Over Misconduct Concerns
The Niger State House of Assembly has called on Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to issue an executive order banning “Marker’s Day” and “Sign-Out” celebrations in all public and private secondary and tertiary institutions in the state.
The decision followed a motion by Hon. Muhammad Sani Idris, representing Tafa constituency, who raised concerns over the growing incidents of unruly behaviour, misconduct, and immoral acts during such events.
Idris explained that while the “sign-out” tradition was originally meant for graduating students to joyfully mark the end of their school sessions, it has increasingly been overshadowed by disturbing incidents that undermine the values of discipline and responsibility.
He warned that the trend could derail efforts to nurture well-rounded and morally upright students.
The motion received unanimous backing from lawmakers, who agreed that the situation required urgent attention.
Presiding over the plenary, Deputy Speaker Hon. Afiniki Dauda assured that the Assembly would follow up with the governor and the State Ministry of Education to ensure the ban is promptly enforced.
If implemented, the move will mark a significant change in how final-year celebrations are conducted across schools in Niger State.
