Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for the total dismantling of Iran's nuclear infrastructure, reiterating his stance on Sunday as ongoing talks between the United States and Iran aim to reach a nuclear agreement.

The U.S. and Iran have held three rounds of indirect discussions, mediated by Oman, to negotiate a deal that would prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons while lifting the severe economic sanctions on the country. Following recent talks in Rome, Oman reported that the U.S. and Iran are working toward an accord that would allow Tehran to maintain its peaceful nuclear energy development while ensuring that it cannot produce nuclear weapons.

However, Netanyahu expressed skepticism about the talks, stressing that the only acceptable deal would be one that involves the complete dismantling of Iran's nuclear infrastructure. Drawing a comparison to Libya's 2003 agreement, in which the country abandoned its nuclear, chemical, biological, and missile programs, Netanyahu’s comments emphasize Israel's demand that Iran be stripped of any nuclear capabilities, even for non-military purposes.

In response, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi asserted that Tehran would resist any efforts to dictate its foreign policy. In a statement posted on X, Araqchi criticized Netanyahu for attempting to influence U.S. diplomatic efforts, writing, "What is striking is how brazenly Netanyahu is now dictating what President Trump can and cannot do in his diplomacy with Iran."

Despite the ongoing diplomatic negotiations, Israel has not ruled out the possibility of military action against Iran's nuclear facilities. Netanyahu reinforced Israel's position on Sunday, stating, "We are in close contact with the United States. But I said, one way or the other, Iran will not have nuclear weapons."

Tensions between Israel and Iran have been escalating in recent years, with military confrontations further deepening the rift. In 2024, Iran launched missile and drone attacks on Israel in retaliation for Israeli strikes that targeted Iranian generals and officials associated with Iranian-backed militias. These events highlight the fragile security situation in the region.

As U.S.-Iran negotiations continue, Israel remains focused on its security concerns, particularly Iran’s ballistic missile program. Netanyahu emphasized that any potential nuclear deal with Iran must also address the prevention of Tehran’s missile development.

The outcome of these talks is poised to have significant implications for regional stability in the Middle East, where the ongoing rivalry between Israel and Iran plays a central role in shaping political and military dynamics. The international community will closely monitor the resolution of Iran’s nuclear ambitions and Israel’s security concerns, as the balance between diplomatic engagement and military intervention continues to define the future of the region.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
