NDLEA PARTNERS WITH ONDO STATE TO END CANNABIS CULTIVATION
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has partnered with the Ondo State Government and local communities to combat cannabis cultivation through its Alternative Development Project (ADP). The initiative seeks to encourage communities involved in illicit cannabis farming to transition to legitimate crop cultivation and sustainable livelihoods.
The NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd), launched the pilot of the ADP on Tuesday in Akure, Ondo State, explaining that the project aims to end the long-standing conflict between law enforcement and illicit drug producers. The ADP also aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, promoting food security and community development.
Speaking at a town hall meeting with stakeholders, Marwa said, “We are here to build a robust community network to support the Alternative Development Project; to locate and establish alternatives to illicit cropping; and to ensure a smooth transition from illicit cropping to food security.” He emphasized inclusivity, noting that croppers, vulnerable individuals, and other stakeholders would be active participants in the project to ensure its sustainability.
The pilot scheme will be implemented in three pioneering communities in Ondo State, with plans for nationwide expansion in the future.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa welcomed the initiative, pledging full support from the state government. “We will continue to strengthen collaboration with relevant stakeholders… towards stemming the tide of drug abuse here in Ondo State and in Nigeria at large,” he said.
Traditional leaders also expressed their commitment to the programme. The Olowo of Owo Kingdom, Oba Ajibade Okunoye, affirmed that the council of Obas would fully support the NDLEA in the fight against illicit drugs and urged youths to participate in the initiative.
The NDLEA’s Alternative Development Project represents a shift toward community-centered engagement, offering sustainable alternatives to illicit activities while promoting public safety and agricultural development.
