NDLEA LAUNCHES NEW STRATEGY TO CURB DRUG ABUSE AND CLOSE POLICY GAPS
Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has announced that Nigeria’s new National Drug Control Master Plan (NDCMP) 2026–2030 is set to strengthen efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking nationwide.
Marwa made the statement at the agency’s national headquarters in Abuja while receiving the final evaluation report on the 2021–2025 drug control strategy. He said the new plan is designed to enhance existing measures and address gaps identified in previous drug control operations.
“The National Drug Control Master Plan 2026–2030 will reinforce Nigeria’s ongoing drug control initiatives, especially in areas that impact public health and national security,” Marwa stated.
The NDLEA chairman made the remarks after reviewing the performance of the NDCMP 2021–2025, which assessed the country’s response to drug-related challenges over the past five years. He commended the evaluation team, praising the consultants for their “excellent work” in reviewing the implementation of the previous master plan.
The agency noted that insights from the assessment will inform strategies under the new policy framework. Marwa emphasized that “when fully implemented, the NDCMP 2026–2030 will bridge gaps in drug demand reduction,” highlighting ongoing efforts to curb substance abuse and strengthen prevention programmes.
The launch of the new plan underscores the government’s commitment to reviewing national drug policies, improving enforcement measures, and enhancing rehabilitation systems. Authorities also stressed that the strategy aims to improve coordination among stakeholders and strengthen Nigeria’s overall response to drug-related challenges.
