NAVY HANDS OVER 19 BAGS OF SUSPECTED CANNABIS

The Nigerian Navy has handed over 19 bags of substances suspected to be Cannabis Sativa to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Anambra State.

The items were recovered during intelligence-led operations in Atani, Ogbaru Local Government Area, and were formally transferred to the NDLEA Onitsha Unit on Tuesday.

The Commanding Officer of the Naval Outpost, Onitsha, Kabir Yusuf, said the substances were recovered by personnel of the Forward Operating Base, Amiyi, during routine patrols.

According to him, naval personnel spotted a vehicle suspected of transporting the illicit substances and pursued it. The suspect reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled.

A follow-up operation later led security personnel to a warehouse allegedly used for storing the substances. A search of the facility resulted in the recovery of the 19 bags.

Yusuf said the operation demonstrated the vigilance and readiness of naval personnel in tackling activities considered harmful to communities.

The recovered substances were subsequently handed over to the NDLEA for further investigation and necessary action.

The Navy also requested that the NDLEA provide an update on the outcome of its investigation when completed.

The development highlights continued collaboration between security agencies in efforts to tackle the movement and storage of prohibited substances in Anambra State.
