The Nasarawa State Police Command has denied viral social media claims alleging that over 30 female students of the Federal University, Lafia, were raped during a recent security incident reportedly involving armed bandits.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Ramhan Nansel, described the reports as baseless and untrue. He emphasized that a thorough investigation had revealed no evidence to support the claims.

“That story is entirely false,” Nansel said.

“There is no credible information or record indicating that bandits attacked the university and sexually assaulted students. Our investigations, including interviews with university officials and students, do not support that claim.”

According to Nansel, the police engaged with the university’s Chief Security Officer, Information Officer, and several students, all of whom confirmed that no such incident took place.

“If something of that magnitude had happened, it wouldn’t have gone unnoticed,” he stressed. “Students would have spoken up, and the university would have made an official report. But nothing of the sort occurred.”

Nansel did, however, confirm that a robbery occurred on July 27 in the student village. A female student named Jennifer reported her phone, power bank, and handbag were stolen. A male student also sustained injuries while trying to escape the scene.

“There was a robbery incident, not a case of rape,” he clarified. “No sexual assault was reported, and no evidence has emerged to support any such allegation. Claiming that 30 students were raped is not only false but dangerously misleading.”

The spokesperson urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could cause panic or fear. He reaffirmed the police’s commitment to protecting students and residents in the area.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
