NAIRA INCHES UP AGAINST DOLLAR AS CBN WARNS AGAINST ABUSE OF CURRENCY
The naira continued its slow but steady climb against the US dollar in the official foreign exchange market on Thursday, according to data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Figures published on the CBN’s official website showed the local currency trading at ₦1,534.52 per dollar, slightly stronger than Wednesday’s ₦1,534.83. This represents a marginal gain of about 0.3 on a day-to-day basis.
However, at the parallel (black) market, the naira held steady at ₦1,565 per dollar — the same rate as the previous day.
The latest movement follows a recent streak of appreciation across both official and unofficial markets.
Meanwhile, the CBN has reiterated its call for Nigerians to respect and protect the national currency. In a statement, CBN spokesperson Hakama Sidi Ali warned against spraying naira notes at events, hawking them, or engaging in any form of mutilation or counterfeiting.
With the naira showing slight gains, market watchers will be keeping an eye on whether this momentum can be sustained in the coming days.
