NAIRA GAINS SLIGHTLY AGAINST DOLLAR IN OFFICIAL AND BLACK MARKETS
For the first time this week, Nigeria’s naira has recorded some relief by appreciating slightly against the US dollar in both the official and black markets.
According to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the naira traded at ₦1,534.79 per dollar on Thursday, showing a minor improvement from ₦1,535.62 on Wednesday. That’s a gain of 83 kobo in the official market—small, but still positive.
Over in the black market, there was a similar improvement. The naira appreciated by ₦5, trading at ₦1,535 to the dollar, compared to the consistent ₦1,540 rate seen earlier in the week.
This marks the first time the naira has appreciated in both markets since Friday, July 18, 2025. Earlier in the week—Monday through Wednesday—the currency had been on a steady decline in the official market while staying unchanged on the parallel market.
Though the gains are minimal, they’re seen as a welcome development for Nigerians closely watching the forex rates, especially importers, businesses, and travelers.
Analysts say it’s too early to tell if this signals a sustained recovery, but any sign of stability is a step in the right direction.
