The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed off an illegal herbal medicine production facility in Kaduna State.

The factory, identified as SHIFA’UNNUR and located in Mararaba Jos, Igabi Local Government Area, was shut down on Friday after it was discovered to be operating without registration and failing to meet basic operational standards.

According to Shamsuddeen Mani, a Principal Regulatory Officer who led the operation, the crackdown followed credible intelligence that exposed the factory’s activities.

“It’s alarming that all the equipment used in the unhygienic and hidden setup was substandard. These products pose serious health risks as their safety, quality, and efficacy cannot be guaranteed,” Mani told reporters.

What Was Seized

During the raid, unregistered herbal products worth about ₦5 million were confiscated. NAFDAC confirmed that the seized items would be destroyed, while the facility remains sealed pending further investigation.

NAFDAC stressed that herbal products, just like conventional medicines, must undergo proper regulatory checks to ensure they are safe for human consumption. Operating without registration not only violates the law but also endangers public health.

Mani reiterated that the agency would continue to clamp down on violators:
“NAFDAC, empowered by law to safeguard public health, will not relent in pursuing violators and tackling sharp practices in the production and distribution of unregistered products.”

This move serves as a strong warning to those producing and selling unapproved medicines—cutting corners comes at the expense of people’s lives and will not be tolerated.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
