The Ondo State Police Command has announced plans to arraign a suspect, Ilegbami Jacob, for allegedly posing as a cocoa farmer to defraud one Sunday Adegboyo of N36 million. The suspect reportedly promised to supply 5.56 tons of cocoa beans but failed to deliver.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

Ayanlade said the suspect was arrested following a petition by the victim, who reported that the suspect had reneged on their agreement. Police operatives tracked Jacob to his hideout in Akure, the state capital, after he fled from the victim.

“In July 2025, the complainant entered into a business agreement with the suspect, who falsely claimed to be a cocoa merchant. He collected N36 million from the victim with a promise to supply 5.56 tons of cocoa beans but failed to deliver and absconded, providing false assurances that the goods would be sourced from Taraba State,” Ayanlade explained.

He added that, using technology and the expertise of the command’s Scorpion Squad, officers located and arrested the suspect in Akure.

“The suspect is currently in custody and will be charged in court once the investigation concludes. The Ondo State Police Command remains committed to dismantling criminal networks and protecting legitimate business interests,” he said.

Ayanlade also urged business owners and investors to verify the identities and credibility of partners before engaging in large financial transactions, noting that vigilance is key in preventing fraud.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
