Social media is abuzz after photos of a Muslim woman’s call to bar in full niqab went viral, sparking mixed reactions and debate across Nigeria.

The new lawyer, Rodiyah Omotoyosi Mikhail, was officially called to the Nigerian Bar on Wednesday, September 24, marking the beginning of her legal career.

In the trending photos, Rodiyah was seen dressed in the traditional lawyer’s attire—wig and gown—while also wearing her niqab, which covered her entire face except for her eyes.

A friend who shared the images on X (formerly Twitter) celebrated her achievement, but the photos quickly attracted public attention. Many users questioned whether wearing a niqab in such a formal legal setting was legally permissible under the dress code of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

While some critics expressed doubts about the appropriateness of the attire, others praised Rodiyah’s courage and commitment to her faith.

Close friends and supporters of the new lawyer have since defended her, describing her as a woman of strong character, intelligence, and principle.

The development has reignited conversations on religious expression, professional dress codes, and inclusivity within Nigeria’s legal system.

For now, the Nigerian Bar Association is yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
