MUSEVENI’S SON MUHOOZI DECLARES 2031 PRESIDENTIAL AMBITION IN UGANDA

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has announced his intention to contest for the country’s presidency in 2031, signalling his ambition to succeed his father, President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled Uganda since 1986.

Kainerugaba, 52, made the declaration in a series of posts on X, stating that he would seek what he described as “the highest office in the land” in 2031. He also expressed confidence that he would win the election, saying his father’s support would help him secure a large majority of the votes.

The military chief specifically said he expected to receive about 90 per cent of the vote with the backing of Museveni, whom he referred to as “Mzee.” He further indicated that his father would serve as his campaign manager if he pursues the presidential bid.

Muhoozi has long been viewed as a potential successor to his father and has previously expressed presidential ambitions. His latest declaration comes after he did not contest the 2026 presidential election, which saw the 81-year-old Museveni seek another term in office.

Kainerugaba’s political ambitions have attracted considerable attention because he currently serves as Uganda’s military chief while also leading the Patriotic League of Uganda. His growing political profile has fuelled speculation over the country's eventual succession, although Museveni’s own plans beyond his current term remain an important factor.

The announcement is likely to intensify debate about Uganda’s political future and the possibility of a transfer of power within the Museveni family. For now, Muhoozi has made his intentions clear, setting his sights on the 2031 presidential election and positioning himself for a potential bid to lead Uganda.
