MTN REPORTS CYBERSECURITY BREACH, URGES CUSTOMERS TO STAY VIGILANT
MTN has announced that a cybersecurity breach has impacted some of its customers' personal data in select markets. The breach, which was discovered late Thursday, involved unauthorized access to certain parts of MTN's systems. However, the company reassured the public that its core network, billing systems, and financial services infrastructure remain intact and secure.
In its statement, MTN clarified that there is no indication that customer accounts or wallets have been compromised. The company acted quickly by implementing its cybersecurity response protocols and has notified law enforcement agencies, including the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Hawks, as well as relevant regulatory authorities in the affected areas.
MTN is working closely with law enforcement and regulators to investigate the incident. Affected customers are being informed in accordance with local data protection laws.
While the investigation continues, MTN is advising customers to be extra cautious and follow recommended cybersecurity practices. These include placing fraud alerts on credit reports, updating mobile and banking apps, using strong and unique passwords, avoiding suspicious links, and refraining from sharing sensitive information such as passwords, PINs, or OTPs through phone calls, SMS, or email. Enabling multi-factor authentication is also recommended where possible.
"Customer privacy and security remain our highest priority," MTN emphasized. "We are fully committed to protecting our systems and maintaining the trust our customers have in us."
The company assured stakeholders that it is diligently managing the situation and will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
