Muslim Group Slams Masquerade Attack on Cleric in Oyo, Demands Justice

The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) Nigeria has strongly condemned the assault of a Muslim cleric during a recent cultural masquerade procession in Ogbomosho, Oyo State.

According to the Islamic advocacy group, a masquerader identified as Lobanika struck off the cap of an Imam who was peacefully standing by the roadside to allow the procession to pass. The incident, which has since sparked outrage, was described by MPAC as an act of provocation and a serious violation of the Imam’s rights.

In a statement signed on Friday by its Executive Chairman, Disu Kamor, MPAC described the attack as a “brazen disregard for civil norms and individual rights,” emphasizing that no culture or tradition has the authority to override constitutionally protected freedoms.

“The act of forcibly removing an Imam’s cap — a symbol of religious identity and modesty — is an affront to both human dignity and Islamic values,” the statement read.

MPAC called on the Nigeria Police Force to urgently investigate the incident and ensure that the masquerader and any accomplices are prosecuted. The group also urged the Oyo State Government to introduce firm regulations for masquerade festivals to ensure they are conducted within the bounds of the law and respect the rights of all citizens.

The statement further warned against the misuse of cultural traditions as tools of intimidation or religious harassment, stating:

“No culture, tradition, or festival has the right to infringe on the rights of any Nigerian. The Nigerian Constitution remains the supreme law of the land. Neither masquerades nor traditionalists are above it.”

MPAC urged traditional rulers and community leaders to take responsibility when such processions lead to violence or intimidation, and emphasized that justice must be served to prevent future occurrences.

While encouraging Muslims to remain peaceful and law-abiding, the organization warned that silence should not be mistaken for weakness.

MPAC concluded by reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of Muslims and all law-abiding citizens across Nigeria.
