MOURINHO THANKS CHELSEA FANS AFTER STAMFORD BRIDGE DEFEAT: “I DON’T FEED ON MEMORIES”
Jose Mourinho made an emotional return to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, but it wasn’t the homecoming he had hoped for. His Benfica side fell 1-0 to Chelsea in the Champions League, courtesy of an unfortunate own goal from Richard Rios.
Despite the disappointment, Mourinho, who enjoyed two trophy-laden spells as Chelsea manager, received a rousing reception from the home supporters. The Blues faithful sang his name throughout the game, reminding the Portuguese coach of the indelible mark he left on the club.
Mourinho, now 62, won three Premier League titles with Chelsea and is still regarded as one of the club’s greatest-ever managers. Yet, he made it clear that his focus remains on the present.
“I don’t feed myself with these memories, I feed myself with victories, with results,” Mourinho said after the game. “But I thank them for singing my name—I showed my appreciation on the pitch. Whenever I’m in London, I still meet Chelsea fans every day.”
This latest result marks Mourinho’s seventh consecutive defeat at Stamford Bridge since his famous 2010 victory with Inter Milan. While the loss stings, the warm reception from Chelsea fans proved that his legacy at the club remains untouchable.
