MORE GOVERNORS SET TO JOIN APC – PARTY LEADERS SAY DEFECTIONS JUST BEGINNING

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has revealed that more state governors are preparing to defect to its fold in the coming months as Nigeria heads towards the 2027 general elections.

This was disclosed by the APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, during a capacity-building seminar for the party’s zonal and state publicity secretaries held in Abuja. The seminar, themed “Communicating Renewed Hope,” focused on improving party communication and strategy.

Basiru explained that the recent wave of defections is only the beginning of a wider political realignment expected before the next elections. He stated that the APC currently has 23 state governors under its control and expects that number to grow.

“More governors who are strong contenders are coming to join us. Even some who aren’t politically viable are knocking on the door. That tells you how attractive our platform is right now,” Basiru said.

He also criticized the use of fake news, ethnic division, and religious sentiments in politics, calling on party media officers to be more proactive in countering misinformation. According to him, images from war-torn countries are often falsely used to represent Nigeria online, misleading the public.

He urged APC spokespersons to “blow their trumpet” and promote the successes of APC-led states and the federal government, instead of allowing opposition narratives to dominate.

Speaking at the same event, the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, highlighted what he described as significant macroeconomic reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu. He likened the government’s efforts to building a skyscraper, explaining that the groundwork may not be immediately visible to the public but is crucial for long-term development.

Alake praised the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of exchange rates as bold moves that freed up national revenue. He noted that both federal and state governments now have more funds to work with, leading to debt clearance and increased investment in infrastructure in many states.

He concluded by saying the Tinubu-led administration has laid a solid foundation for economic recovery, and the results will soon become more apparent.

As Nigeria moves closer to another election cycle, the APC appears confident in its growing political strength and is preparing for what may be a major shift in the country’s political map.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
