MONDAY MAGIC! HAT-TRICK HERO, ADAMS STRIKES LATE FOR SEVILLA
Nigerian footballers lit up the weekend across Europe and the United States, with Gift Monday grabbing a stunning treble for Washington Spirit, while Akor Adams struck late to secure victory for Sevilla.
UNITED STATES
Gift Monday (Washington Spirit)
Super Falcons forward Gift Monday was unstoppable in the NWSL, firing three goals in the first half to power Washington Spirit past Houston Dash at Audi Field.
Operating in a front three with Trinity Rodman and Rosemonde Kouassi, Monday found the net in the 18th and 21st minutes before completing her hat-trick in the 36th.
Deborah Abiodun, her Nigerian teammate, was an unused substitute.
Michelle Alozie (Houston Dash)
For the visitors, full-back Michelle Alozie was also left on the bench and did not feature.
SPAIN
Akor Adams (Sevilla)
Adams came off the bench in the 69th minute and proved decisive for Sevilla. With just minutes remaining, the striker pounced on a Jose Angel Carmona pass to score the winner in the 87th minute, sealing a 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano.
Sadiq Umar (Real Sociedad)
Elsewhere in La Liga, Sadiq Umar featured briefly in Real Sociedad’s clash with Barcelona. Introduced in the 81st minute, he was unable to prevent his side from losing 2-1, as goals from Jules Kounde and Robert Lewandowski turned the match in Barça’s favour.
FRANCE
Terem Moffi (OGC Nice)
Moffi led the line for Nice in their Ligue 1 tie against Paris FC, lasting 75 minutes before being substituted. He combined with Sofiane Diop, who opened the scoring in the 40th minute, but a late penalty from Jean-Philippe Krasso meant the game finished 1-1.
Moses Simon (Paris FC)
Simon also started the match for Paris FC, playing until the closing stages before being replaced. Though he had no direct contribution, his side left with a valuable point after Krasso’s spot-kick rescued them.
ENGLAND
Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Samuel Chukwueze (Fulham)
Fulham’s Nigerian trio all featured in their 3-1 loss to Aston Villa.
Iwobi and Bassey started, while Chukwueze entered as a late substitute. Raul Jimenez gave Fulham an early lead, but Villa responded with goals from Ollie Watkins, John McGinn and Emiliano Buendia.
Bassey received a booking before being substituted, Iwobi was withdrawn in the 65th minute, and Chukwueze was introduced in the final ten minutes.
Chiamaka Nnadozie (Brighton)
Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie kept another clean sheet in the Women’s Super League, helping Brighton to a 1-0 win over Everton thanks to a Michelle Agyemang strike.
Rofiat Imuran (London City Lionesses)
Imuran was on the bench as her side suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Manchester City, with Khadija Shaw scoring twice alongside goals from Vivianne Miedema and Laura Blindkilde.
From the NWSL to La Liga and the Premier League, Nigerian players once again proved decisive — none more so than Gift Monday and Akor Adams, who delivered match-winning performances for their clubs.
