MINISTER ORDERS WORK-FREE FRIDAY, CURFEW AHEAD OF FCT AREA COUNCIL ELECTIONS
Ahead of the Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026, Minister Nyesom Wike has announced a work-free day on Friday, February 20, and a restriction of movement from 8 p.m. on Friday to 6 a.m. on Saturday.
The minister made the announcement during a special broadcast on national television and radio on Thursday, urging residents to participate actively in the elections.
In the broadcast, he said:
"On Saturday, February 21, we will have a crucial opportunity to shape the future of our great Federal Capital Territory. The election of new or returning chairmen and councilors for the six area councils is a momentous occasion, and I urge all residents to exercise their right to vote responsibly."
He further called on citizens to conduct themselves in an orderly and lawful manner, respecting the rules, one another, and the outcome of the election.
Wike announced that, with the approval of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Friday, February 20, 2026, would be a work-free day to allow residents to travel to their communities ahead of the elections. He also confirmed that the restriction of movement within the FCT would take effect from 8 p.m. on Friday to 6 a.m. on Saturday, directing security agencies to enforce compliance.
The minister took the opportunity to commend President Tinubu for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026 into law, describing it as a commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.
He added:
"Democracy is an evolving process, and we continue to improve by reviewing the Electoral Act to enhance our democratic system. I urge all FCT residents to make their voices heard by voting for candidates of their choice."
Wike concluded by emphasizing that the elections should foster the emergence of leaders who will contribute meaningfully to the development, peace, and prosperity of the FCT, calling on residents to work together to build a brighter future for the territory and its children.
