Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, has announced the loss of valuables running into millions of naira following a midnight fire that engulfed part of the Directorate of Students’ Affairs building.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, September 2, 2025, destroyed several items, including all students’ academic and graduation gowns.

In a statement released by the university’s Corporate Affairs Division on Wednesday, it was confirmed that although the fire caused extensive damage, no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded.

The statement read in part: “A fire outbreak at the Directorate of Students’ Affairs building on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, led to the destruction of valuables worth millions of naira. The inferno gutted the section of the building where academic and graduation gowns were kept. Sadly, all the gowns were completely destroyed. However, no casualties were recorded.”

The university further disclosed that an investigative panel, chaired by a senior professor, has been set up to determine the cause of the fire and recommend measures to improve campus safety.

Members of the university community have been urged to contribute to the investigation by sharing observations or suggestions on fire safety with the panel’s secretary via WhatsApp on 08056066643 or email at Kukoyi.oluyemisi@oouagoiwoye.edu.ng
