MESSI HITS 930TH CAREER GOAL AS SAN DIEGO FIGHT BACK TO HOLD INTER MIAMI
Lionel Messi reached another major milestone on Sunday night as he scored his 930th career goal during Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw with San Diego FC in Major League Soccer. The Argentine forward produced a brilliant free-kick to bring Miami level after the visitors had taken an early lead. Despite Messi’s landmark goal and a later strike from Luis Suárez, Inter Miami could not hold on to the advantage as San Diego fought back to claim a point.
San Diego opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Anders Dreyer finished a through ball from Jeppe Tverskov, lifting the ball over Inter Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair. Messi restored parity 12 minutes later after he was fouled just outside the penalty area. The 39-year-old stepped up and curled a left-footed free-kick around the defensive wall, with the ball striking the post before crossing the line beyond goalkeeper CJ dos Santos.

The free-kick carried several milestones for Messi. It was his 20th goal of the 2026 MLS season and the 75th free-kick goal of his professional career, while also taking his total number of goals for Inter Miami to 101. Messi had reached 100 goals for the club only four days earlier during Inter Miami’s Campeones Cup victory over Cruz Azul. The latest achievement further extended his career scoring record as he continues to produce goals for the MLS side.
Inter Miami eventually took the lead in the 74th minute when Luis Suárez found the net to put the hosts ahead 2-1. The home side appeared set to secure all three points, but San Diego refused to give up. Dreyer struck again in the 82nd minute, scoring his second goal of the evening to restore parity and earn the visitors a share of the points. The result meant Inter Miami had to settle for another draw despite leading at different stages of the match.
The stalemate extended Inter Miami’s run to four consecutive MLS draws and left the club with 46 points from 26 matches. Miami’s record now stands at 12 wins, four defeats and 10 draws. While the result denied the club victory, Messi’s latest goal added another notable achievement to his career and marked his continued importance to Inter Miami as the team progresses through the MLS season.
