MESSI EQUALS RONALDO’S WORLD CUP QUALIFIER GOAL RECORD AFTER BRACE AGAINST VENEZUELA
Lionel Messi continues to make history on the international stage, this time by matching long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo’s record in World Cup Qualifiers.
The 38-year-old captain scored twice in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Venezuela on Friday night. Messi found the net in the 39th and 80th minutes, while Lautaro Martínez sealed the win with a third goal for the defending world champions.
With the brace, Messi has now scored 36 goals in World Cup Qualifiers, equaling Ronaldo’s tally. The only player ahead of them is former Guatemalan striker Carlos Ruiz, who holds the record with 39 goals.
The Monumental Stadium erupted in applause as Messi walked onto the pitch with his children, highlighting once again the love and admiration fans hold for him.
Despite his brilliance, Messi recently hinted that he may not feature in the 2026 World Cup, citing age and fitness concerns. If true, this could be one of the final chapters in his legendary career, which has already seen him win 46 major trophies, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
For now, Messi’s name stands firmly alongside Ronaldo’s in yet another record — a reminder of their unmatched dominance in world football.
