MEET THREE NIGERIAN STUDENTS COMPETING WITH OVER 150 COUNTRIES AT GLOBAL STEM OLYMPIAD

Three exceptionally talented Nigerian students have been selected to represent the country at the prestigious Global STEM Olympiad, competing against participants from over 150 countries in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology.

The students, all secondary school pupils, were chosen after a rigorous national selection process organised by the Nigerian Academy of Science and the Ministry of Education. Their participation is being funded by a combination of government support and private sector sponsorship.

The trio includes 16-year-old Miss Aisha Bello from Kano, who specialises in physics; 15-year-old Master Chinedu Okoro from Lagos, a mathematics prodigy; and 17-year-old Miss Fatima Yusuf from Abuja, who excels in chemistry. The students have already distinguished themselves in national competitions and are expected to put up a strong performance at the global stage.

Speaking at a send-off ceremony in Abuja on Friday, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tunji Alausa, expressed confidence in the students. “These young ambassadors represent the bright future of Nigeria. We are proud of their achievements and wish them success as they compete against the best brains from around the world,” Alausa said.

The Global STEM Olympiad is one of the most competitive academic events for secondary school students, testing problem-solving skills, creativity, and scientific knowledge. Nigerian students have historically performed creditably in such competitions, winning several medals in the past.

The students’ parents and teachers have expressed pride in their selection and thanked the government for the opportunity. The team will depart for the host country in the coming days, accompanied by seasoned coaches and mentors.

Education stakeholders see the participation as an opportunity to showcase Nigerian talent on the global stage and inspire more young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The Nigerian team is expected to return with strong results that will further boost the country’s reputation in international academic competitions.
