MEDIA GROUP, ICPC DEEPEN ANTI-CORRUPTION COLLABORATION
The Media Anti-Corruption Initiative has partnered with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission to strengthen efforts to promote transparency and accountability, particularly within Nigeria’s maritime sector.
The partnership was formalised after a seven-member MACI delegation led by its National President, Funso Olojo, visited the ICPC Lagos Zonal Office. (punchng.com)
The Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner, Lagos Zonal Office, Chukwurah Alexander, described the media as an important partner in the commission’s public enlightenment and corruption-prevention efforts.
Olojo said MACI would support the ICPC’s mandate through responsible and ethical journalism while encouraging citizens to participate in efforts to promote integrity and accountability.
The stakeholders discussed ways to shift anti-corruption efforts from mainly reactive responses to more preventive and citizen-focused approaches.
Areas identified for collaboration include journalist training, anti-corruption advocacy, public sensitisation and the promotion of best practices in corruption reporting.
They also discussed developing a framework for data sharing between the ICPC and MACI to support fact-based journalism.
The two organisations agreed on the importance of distinguishing between general information and actionable intelligence when reporting on corruption cases.
They also proposed joint community sensitisation campaigns aimed at increasing public awareness and discouraging participation in corrupt practices.
The partnership is expected to strengthen cooperation between anti-corruption institutions and the media in promoting transparency and ethical conduct.
