MBAISE IRIJI IS CULTURAL FESTIVAL, NOT POLITICS – COMMITTEE

The Organising Committee of the Mbaise Iriji Festival has warned against attempts to politicise the annual cultural event, stressing that it remains a purely traditional celebration.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the committee clarified that the Iriji (New Yam) Festival is a cultural heritage event meant to celebrate agricultural success, unity, and the rich traditions of the Mbaise people in Imo State.

Committee Chairman, Chief Chinedu Opara, said: “Mbaise Iriji is not a political gathering. It is a time for our people to come together, appreciate God’s blessings, and promote our cultural identity.”

He urged all indigenes and stakeholders to participate fully without introducing partisan politics into the festival.

The statement comes amid reports of some politicians attempting to use the event for political mobilisation ahead of future elections.

The Mbaise Iriji Festival is one of the most prominent cultural celebrations in the South East, attracting thousands of people annually.
