MASCHERANO BLASTS MLS OVER MESSI’S SUSPENSION: "WOULD THIS HAPPEN IF IT WAS AN AWAY GAME?"
Argentina U-23 coach Javier Mascherano has criticised Major League Soccer (MLS) over Lionel Messi’s recent suspension, calling the decision suspicious and unfair.
Speaking to reporters at Chase Stadium after a match, Mascherano, a former teammate of Messi at Barcelona, didn’t hold back his frustration. The MLS had announced Messi’s one-match suspension just a day before the game — a move that didn’t sit well with the coach.
“I don’t usually talk about other people’s decisions, but this is strange,” Mascherano said. “One day something is announced, and the next, the complete opposite happens.”
Mascherano pointed out that Messi, who has been playing a hectic schedule of matches, is often overworked to attract crowds and boost ticket sales.
“When it comes to selling tickets or filling up stadiums, no one complains about Messi playing every minute,” he continued. “But now that we have a home game, suddenly he’s suspended? Would they have done the same if it was an away match?”
The controversy comes just days after Messi and fellow Inter Miami star Jordi Alba skipped the MLS All-Star Game, despite being listed in the squad. The league responded by handing both players a one-match suspension, in line with MLS rules that require selected players to participate in All-Star events unless medically excused.
Mascherano’s comments have sparked debate among fans and analysts, with many questioning whether Messi is being treated fairly or used as a marketing tool by the league.
For now, Messi will serve his suspension, but the criticism from a respected figure like Mascherano raises fresh concerns about how the league manages its biggest stars.
