Martin Onovo, the former presidential candidate for the defunct National Conscience Party in the 2015 elections, has shared crucial insights on how opposition parties can effectively challenge President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 presidential election. In a recent interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos, Onovo emphasized the importance of unity and the selection of a strong candidate.

Reflecting on the formation of an opposition coalition aimed at defeating the All Progressives Congress (APC), Onovo stated, “The coalition requires a vigorous candidate with a clear agenda and vision to enhance its chances in 2027.” He stressed the need for a leader with a solid background of integrity and the capability to resonate with the electorate.

He firmly asserted, “The opposition should avoid relying on older candidates, such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Instead, it’s time to harness the energy of the youth.” Onovo called for a candidate who embodies moral strength, mental acuity, and physical fitness, alongside a patriotic agenda to drive the nation forward.

Onovo believes that if the opposition can unify and focus their efforts, they have significant advantages to leverage in the upcoming election. He also commented on the APC's potential to maintain power, suggesting that if the current administration can effectively tackle issues such as subsidy removal and security challenges, they might secure a victory in 2027.

While he clarified that he is not directly involved in the newly formed coalition, Onovo has been a part of the Coalition of United Political Parties since 2019. He urged all Nigerians to come together for the nation’s development and to support leadership that aligns with the country’s aspirations.

The remarks come on the heels of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s recent announcement regarding a coalition aimed at unseating Tinubu, which included notable opposition figures such as Peter Obi, Babachir Lawal, and Nasir El-Rufai at a press conference in Abuja.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
