MARITIME EXHIBITION, NATIONAL GALLERY DEEPEN COASTAL CREATIVITY
The National Gallery of Art, in collaboration with key maritime stakeholders, has launched a landmark exhibition aimed at deepening appreciation of coastal creativity and Nigeria’s rich maritime heritage through visual arts and cultural expression.
The exhibition, titled “Waves of Expression: Maritime Narratives in Nigerian Art,” opened on Friday at the National Gallery of Art in Lagos and features works by renowned and emerging artists exploring themes of seafaring, trade, coastal communities, and the blue economy.
Director General of the National Gallery of Art, Mr. Ahmed Mohammed, described the partnership as a strategic effort to connect Nigeria’s artistic heritage with its maritime potential. “This exhibition highlights the deep connection between our coastal communities and the creative spirit of our people. It is a celebration of the sea as a source of inspiration, livelihood, and cultural identity,” Mohammed stated.
The display includes paintings, sculptures, installations, and digital artworks that capture the vibrancy of Nigerian coastal life, the challenges of the maritime sector, and the opportunities in sustainable blue economy development. Several pieces draw attention to environmental issues such as marine pollution and the impact of climate change on coastal regions.
Maritime industry leaders who attended the opening commended the initiative, noting that it provides a unique platform to promote the sector’s cultural significance. The President of the Nigerian Shipowners Association, Mr. Temisan Omatseye, said the exhibition will help raise awareness about the importance of the maritime industry to national development.
Visitors to the exhibition expressed excitement over the creative interpretations of maritime themes. “This is a beautiful way to tell our stories. The artworks remind us of the power and beauty of our coastline and the resilience of our people,” said one art enthusiast.
The exhibition, which runs for six weeks, will feature workshops, panel discussions, and educational programmes for students and young artists. Organisers hope it will inspire greater investment in the creative industry and foster stronger linkages between art and the maritime sector.
The collaboration between the National Gallery of Art and maritime stakeholders is expected to become an annual event, further strengthening the intersection of culture and Nigeria’s blue economy aspirations.
