Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has described his team’s performance as “unacceptable” following their 4–1 defeat to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Speaking after the match in Italy, Carrick accepted responsibility for the result and apologised to supporters who travelled to watch the team.

He said United fell short both individually and collectively, admitting that they did not deserve to take anything from the game.

“It stops with me and I’m absolutely fine with that. I accept that totally,” he said.

United created an early opportunity through Diogo Dalot but struggled to build momentum. Como took control, with Nico Paz scoring twice, while Tasos Douvikas and Jacobo Ramon also found the net. Joshua Zirkzee scored a late consolation for the visitors.

Carrick questioned his side’s intensity, aggression, discipline and willingness to work hard, while giving Como credit for their performance.

The United boss said he understood the frustration of supporters, particularly those who had spent money travelling to Italy. He approached the away fans after the final whistle to apologise.

The defeat extended United’s winless run to seven matches across all competitions, adding to the pressure on Carrick.

However, he insisted that his immediate priority was to examine what went wrong and address the team’s shortcomings.
