MAN STEALS POLICE OFFICER’S CAR RIGHT OUTSIDE BULAWAYO CENTRAL POLICE STATION
In a daring theft that unfolded right under the noses of law enforcement, a man allegedly stole a police officer’s car from the Bulawayo Central Police Station parking area in Zimbabwe.
The incident began on October 31, 2025, when Constable Mashora parked his Honda Fit outside the station before heading on duty. The car, locked and containing the officer’s personal belongings, including clothing and a satchel, was later found missing.
Investigators from the Vehicle Theft Squad tracked the stolen car to 27-year-old Talent Mpofu of Entumbane, who was arrested at his home. Mpofu led officers to a nearby service station near Western Commonage Police Station where the Honda Fit had been abandoned.
However, the situation took a dramatic turn when Mpofu, handcuffed and in custody, allegedly bolted from the police courtyard, returning home where his wife and a neighbor reportedly helped him remove the cuffs. Detectives eventually located him hiding under a bed.
Constable Mashora told the court that the recovered vehicle had different number plates, and that Mpofu was wearing his T-shirt and sandals at the time of his arrest.
Mpofu appeared before a regional magistrate on November 7, 2025, and was remanded in custody. He claimed that he acted out of financial desperation, while the investigation and legal proceedings continue.
The incident has raised eyebrows over security protocols at police facilities, given the boldness of the theft and Mpofu’s escape from custody.
