The Osun State Police Command has arrested a suspect who was captured in a viral video assaulting a female traffic officer while on duty in Osun State.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Police Public Relations Officer Abiodun Ojelabi said the suspect was tracked and apprehended in Edo State after fleeing the scene following the incident.

The video showed the suspect attacking the traffic officer with a stick and shovel while she was carrying out lawful traffic control duties, an act that triggered public outrage online.

According to the police, a coordinated intelligence-led operation was launched immediately after the incident, leading to the suspect’s arrest despite his attempt to escape to Edo State.

The command described the arrest as part of its commitment to ensuring that attacks on law enforcement officers do not go unpunished.

It stressed that assaulting officers performing their lawful duties is a criminal offence and will be prosecuted accordingly.

The suspect is currently in custody and will be charged in court after investigations are concluded.

The Commissioner of Police condemned the attack, describing it as “barbaric and unacceptable,” and urged members of the public to respect law enforcement personnel and cooperate with them during their duties.

The police also advised residents to remain law-abiding and report suspicious activities to the nearest security agencies.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
