Toronto Police have arrested a 28-year-old man, Babatunde Afuwape, in connection with the killing of a 20-year-old university student, Shivank Avasthi, in Canada.

 

According to the Toronto Police Service, Afuwape, a resident of Toronto, was taken into custody and charged with murder following the incident, which occurred on December 23, 2025.

 

In a statement shared on the police’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, authorities confirmed the arrest, saying, “Babatunde Afuwape, 28, of Toronto, has been arrested and charged with the murder of university student 20-year-old Shivank Avasthi on December 23, 2025.”

 

Police disclosed that investigations into the killing are still ongoing and appealed to members of the public for additional information that could assist the case. They noted that the suspect may have had interactions with other individuals on the day the incident occurred.

 

“We believe more people may have interacted with the accused on that day,” the statement added.

 

The Toronto Police urged anyone with relevant information to come forward, emphasising that even minor details could prove crucial to the investigation. Contact details were provided for both direct communication with investigators and anonymous tips.

 

Authorities have not yet released further information regarding the circumstances of the killing, as inquiries remain ongoing.
