MAKINDE URGES PDP MEMBERS TO STAY UNITED, SAYS PARTY WILL BOUNCE BACK
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has urged members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to remain steadfast and optimistic despite the recent wave of defections affecting the party. He assured them that the current challenges are only temporary and that the PDP will emerge stronger.
Makinde made the remarks in Abuja on Monday during the inauguration of the PDP National Convention Transportation Subcommittee, which he chairs. He encouraged party members not to lose faith, stressing that the difficulties the PDP is experiencing will ultimately strengthen it ahead of future elections.
“Although this period may seem tough, it’s only a phase that will pass. When something enduring is being built, it often gets worse before it gets better. So, let us stay committed and united,” Makinde said.
The governor described the PDP as a truly national party with a presence in every ward across Nigeria. He urged supporters to remain steadfast in their loyalty and not be discouraged by ongoing defections.
In recent months, several prominent figures have left the PDP for rival political parties. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark, and former presidential aspirant Dele Momodu are among those reported to have joined the opposition coalition led by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Similarly, some PDP governors, including Akwa Ibom’s Umo Eno, Delta’s Sheriff Oborevwori, and the party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa, have reportedly defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
There are also indications that Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, and Bayelsa Governor, Douye Diri, may also switch allegiance to the APC before the PDP’s National Elective Convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Addressing the situation, Makinde said the defections should not be viewed as the end for the PDP but rather as an opportunity to rebuild with renewed purpose and authenticity.
“This is the time when genuine heroes will emerge, not just for the PDP but for Nigeria as a whole. It’s not the time for despair or self-doubt; it’s the time to stand up and be counted,” he said.
Makinde expressed confidence that the forthcoming convention would produce capable and visionary leaders who can restore public confidence in the PDP and Nigeria.
“I’m holding my corner, trusting the leadership we will enthrone. No matter how small your task, perform it diligently — it will all contribute to our collective success,” he added.
Reflecting on his previous role as Secretary of the PDP National Convention Organising Committee in 2021, Makinde said he accepted the position of Chairman of the Transportation Subcommittee as part of his continued commitment to the party.
He explained that the subcommittee plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth movement of delegates and supporters from across the country to Ibadan for the convention.
“Our work begins before delegates even leave their homes. The success of the convention depends on the efficiency and dedication we bring to our task,” he stated.
Makinde concluded by urging party members to see their responsibilities as acts of service and sacrifice toward restoring the PDP’s founding ideals and setting Nigeria back on the path of progress.
