MAKINDE URGES NIGERIANS TO UNITE AS HE HIGHLIGHTS OYO ACHIEVEMENTS
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called on Nigerians to remain united and appreciate the sacrifices of the country’s founding heroes as the nation marks its 66th Independence anniversary.
Makinde made the call on Thursday during the Independence Day celebration at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan. He was represented at the event by his deputy, Bayo Lawal.
Speaking on the theme, “Dealing Decisively with Insecurity, Banditry and Terrorism Through Community Participation, Awareness and Policing,” the governor said Nigeria’s independence in 1960 was achieved through the sacrifices and struggles of the country’s founding leaders.
He urged citizens to see the country’s diversity as a source of strength and avoid divisions along ethnic and religious lines.
Makinde also said the anniversary provided an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the challenges facing the country and Oyo State, while stressing the importance of democracy and respect for the rule of law.
The governor highlighted what he described as achievements of his administration since 2019, particularly in education, security, sports, business and infrastructure.
He said the state had strengthened security through the Amotekun Corps, which works with other security agencies to maintain peace.
Makinde also highlighted road construction, healthcare, education facilities and the Light Up Oyo initiative as some of the areas where his administration had expanded infrastructure across the state’s five zones.
He thanked residents for their support and cooperation, saying it had contributed to the progress recorded by the government.
The celebration featured a march past, cultural displays and the presentation of prizes, with government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders, security commanders and other dignitaries in attendance.
