MAKINDE NOT ANTI-ISLAM, BUILT MOSQUE, OYO REPLIES MURIC
The Oyo State Government has rejected an allegation by the Muslim Rights Concern that Governor Seyi Makinde is anti-Islam, pointing to his support for mosques, Islamic programmes and Muslim organisations.
In a statement on Thursday, the governor’s media adviser, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, said Makinde’s record demonstrated religious inclusion.
He cited the construction of the Omituntun Mosque and employment of a resident imam before Makinde became governor, alongside support for Ramadan lectures and other Islamic activities.
The government also highlighted its recognition of Hijrah, the Islamic New Year, with a work-free day.
Olanrewaju challenged critics to identify any Islamic practice, institution or religious right restricted by the administration since 2019.
Responding to allegations that Muslim students and teachers had been compelled to attend Christmas carols or Christian crusades, he said no government directive or policy authorising such actions had been produced.
The statement also addressed the demolition of Adogba Central Mosque during work on the Iwo Road Interchange.
According to the government, Makinde visited the community before the demolition, explained the project and promised to rebuild the mosque. It said he subsequently fulfilled that commitment and handed over a replacement with modern facilities.
Olanrewaju maintained that these actions reflected engagement with the Muslim community rather than hostility.
The supplied report did not include MURIC’s detailed allegations or its response to the government’s statement.
