Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and the campaign organisation of APC governorship candidate Sharafadeen Alli have disagreed over the use of diesel-powered generators for streetlights across the state.

The dispute followed comments by Makinde about Alli’s legal career. In response, the Alli campaign organisation questioned the governor’s engineering record, criticising the use of generators to power streetlights and raising concerns about the cost and sustainability of the arrangement.

The campaign organisation argued that the streetlighting system should rely on more sustainable energy sources and questioned the amount spent on the project.

Makinde’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, defended the use of generators, saying unreliable electricity from the national grid had made them necessary. He said the state government would continue to keep major areas illuminated while pursuing alternative power sources.

Olanrewaju also disclosed that the state had built a 5MW solar power plant, which was being upgraded to 12MW.

The exchange comes amid wider political disagreements in Oyo ahead of the 2027 governorship election, with both sides also trading claims over the renovation and use of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex.
