LIVING BESIDE DEATH: OGUN RESIDENTS BATTLE TOXIC DUMPSITE, KILLER ROAD
Residents of several communities in Ogun State are living under harsh and hazardous conditions as they contend with a toxic dumpsite and a deteriorating road that locals describe as life-threatening.
The dumpsite, located close to residential areas, is reportedly emitting foul odours and exposing residents to health risks, with fears of possible disease outbreaks due to poor waste management practices.
Community members say the situation worsens during rainy periods when runoff from the site spreads into nearby homes and water sources, raising concerns about environmental contamination.
In addition to the dumpsite, residents also lament the condition of the connecting road, which has reportedly become nearly impassable due to deep potholes, erosion, and lack of maintenance.
Locals describe the route as a “killer road,” saying it has led to accidents, delays in emergency response, and economic hardship for traders and commuters who depend on it daily.
Many residents have called on the Ogun State Government and relevant agencies to urgently intervene by relocating the dumpsite and rehabilitating the road to prevent further loss of lives and livelihoods.
Environmental activists have also raised concerns, warning that prolonged exposure to waste pollution could have long-term health implications for surrounding communities.
They urged authorities to adopt sustainable waste management systems and invest in infrastructure upgrades to protect public health and safety.
While officials are yet to issue a detailed response, residents say they are hopeful that renewed attention will lead to swift action.
For now, affected communities continue to endure what they describe as a daily struggle for survival in an unsafe environment.
