Welsh football icon Joey Jones, best known for his unforgettable stints at Liverpool, Wrexham, and Chelsea, has passed away at the age of 70.

Jones, who was born in Llandudno, made history as the first Welshman to win the European Cup. He earned 72 caps for Wales and built a football career that spanned more than 20 years, winning the hearts of fans with his fearless tackling, big personality, and deep love for the game.

He rose to prominence at Liverpool between 1975 and 1978, where he won two European Cups, a UEFA Cup, a European Super Cup, and a First Division title. His standout moment came in the 1977 European Cup final when Liverpool beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 in Rome—a win that secured his place in football history.

That triumph inspired one of the most iconic banners ever seen at Anfield:
“Joey ate the frog’s legs, made the Swiss roll, now he’s munching Gladbach.”

Joey had three spells at Wrexham, where he first made a name for himself and later returned as the club’s record signing in 1978—a record that stood until 2022. Wrexham AFC called him a “true club legend” and announced plans to honour him with a statue outside the new Kop Stand at their home ground.

Jones also enjoyed a solid spell with Chelsea, helping the Blues win the Second Division title in the 1983–84 season. He later played for Huddersfield Town before retiring in 1992 at the age of 37.

Liverpool FC paid tribute with a heartfelt message:
“Liverpool FC is deeply saddened by the passing of Joey Jones, aged 70… A league, European Cup and UEFA Cup winner with the Reds… The Welshman made exactly 100 appearances for the club.”

Chelsea also mourned his loss, writing:
“All at Chelsea send our deepest condolences to Joey’s family and friends.”

Joey Jones leaves behind a legacy of passion, loyalty, and unforgettable moments. He will be remembered as one of Welsh football’s true greats.

Rest in peace, Joey Jones. A legend on and off the pitch.
