The Chairman of Epe Local Government Area of Lagos State, Ms Surah Animashaun, has called on traders at Aiyetoro and Oluwo fish markets to prioritise cleanliness and maintain a hygienic trading environment.

Animashaun appealed on Saturday during an inspection visit to major market areas in Epe, stressing that clean markets are essential to protecting public health.

According to her, poor sanitation, especially in fish markets, could lead to the outbreak of communicable diseases if waste is not properly managed.

She urged traders to dispose of refuse appropriately, avoid indiscriminate dumping of waste, and ensure regular cleaning of their stalls and surrounding areas.

“Environmental hygiene is a collective responsibility. Everyone has a role to play in keeping our markets clean and safe,” the council chairman said.

Animashaun also warned that the local government would enforce existing environmental laws, adding that sanctions would be applied to traders who flout sanitation regulations.

She assured traders of the council’s commitment to supporting cleanliness in the markets through the provision of adequate waste disposal facilities and regular monitoring.

In addition, the council boss cautioned traders against roadside trading, particularly around the Aiyetoro market axis, noting that several road accidents had occurred in the area due to obstruction.

“We therefore urge traders to stop selling on the roadside to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of both traders and motorists,” she added.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
