LESOTHO AND UNDP STRENGTHEN TIES TO DRIVE DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION AND AI GROWTH
The Government of Lesotho and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have deepened their partnership to accelerate digital transformation and responsible artificial intelligence development in the country. The move, announced on May 8, 2026, aims to equip Basotho with the skills and tools needed to thrive in the digital age.
The strengthened collaboration focuses on building digital infrastructure, expanding AI training, and creating policies that put people at the centre of technology. It builds on existing efforts such as the establishment of Digital Skills Learning Labs and the training of Digital Ambassadors who take AI knowledge into local communities.
Honourable Minister from the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation led discussions with UNDP representatives. Both sides pledged to work more closely on implementing Lesotho’s National Digital Transformation Strategy, promoting local language AI solutions in Sesotho, and ensuring technology benefits ordinary citizens, especially in rural areas.
This partnership also aligns with broader initiatives, including collaboration with Intel to strengthen AI capacity. Activities include training programmes, curriculum development, and creating awareness so that more Basotho can understand and use AI safely and effectively.
For many people in Lesotho, reliable digital services mean better access to education, healthcare, government services, and economic opportunities. Farmers could use AI tools for better crop management, young people could learn new skills online, and small businesses could reach wider markets. The government and UNDP want to make sure no one is left behind as the country embraces these technologies.
Lesotho has already made notable progress by setting up learning labs and training community ambassadors, including teachers and local leaders. These efforts help spread digital knowledge beyond the capital and create real impact at the grassroots level.
The deepened partnership comes at a time when African countries are increasingly focusing on homegrown digital solutions. Lesotho aims to use AI and digital tools to support national development goals, improve public services, and create jobs for the youth.
UNDP has praised Lesotho’s commitment to inclusive and people-centred digital growth. Both parties say they will continue exploring new areas of cooperation to turn digital ambitions into tangible benefits for citizens.
This latest development signals strong momentum for Lesotho’s digital future, with a clear focus on skills, inclusion, and responsible innovation.
