LEKKI ESTATES, ENTERTAINMENT VENUES TIGHTEN SECURITY AFTER DEADLY CINEMA INCIDENT

Security has been strengthened across several communities and entertainment centres in the Lekki area of Lagos State following the deadly attack at Filmhouse Cinemas IMAX, where two people were killed.

The incident, which occurred on Friday, has prompted entertainment venues in the area to review their security arrangements, with greater attention now being paid to access control, visitor screening and the deployment of additional security personnel. Residential estates have also reportedly increased vigilance in response to concerns over a possible recurrence.

The attack began when a man armed with a machete allegedly attempted to enter the cinema premises but was stopped by security personnel. The suspect reportedly became violent after being denied entry and attacked security guards.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident, with its spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, stating that one security guard was allegedly stabbed to death while another was injured. The suspect was subsequently mobbed and died in the process.

Following the incident, some entertainment facilities in the area have reportedly increased their security manpower and instructed personnel to pay closer attention to individuals entering their premises.

A security guard at one of the facilities said security procedures had been reviewed, particularly regarding people considered suspicious. A nightclub bouncer also disclosed that additional bouncers had been deployed after management instructed the facility to increase its security strength.

Residential communities have similarly responded to the incident. A resident of Lekki Phase One said security arrangements within his estate had been adjusted, with visitors now being monitored more closely and security personnel instructed to remain vigilant.

The President of the Lekki Estates Residents and Stakeholders Association, Sulyman Bello, confirmed that security had been heightened in several communities across the axis.

Bello, however, warned that the response should go beyond a temporary increase in security following a major incident. He called for a more sustainable and systemic approach that would address the underlying security threats in the Lekki corridor.

He said the association had activated its security platform, which includes chief security officers and chairmen of security committees from estates across the area. The association is also communicating with residents and encouraging them to remain alert and report suspicious activities.

Bello further noted that the security concern extends beyond cinemas, clubs and other entertainment venues. He pointed out that residents who jog along roads in the morning and evening could also be vulnerable, particularly in areas where shanties and makeshift settlements are present.

He consequently urged residents to remain vigilant while calling on the Lagos State Government to develop a sustainable solution to the presence of homeless and vulnerable people living in makeshift settlements around the Lekki axis.

The latest security measures reflect growing concern among residents and businesses in the area following the cinema attack, with stakeholders insisting that long-term preventive measures are needed rather than short-term reactions whenever an incident occurs.
