The League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland, Edo and Delta States has warned against the unauthorised conferment of Islamic chieftaincy titles traditionally associated with the organisation.

The League said some individuals and groups had been conferring titles similar or identical to those historically administered by the Muslim clerical body without approval from its constituted leadership.

In a statement signed by the League’s President and Chief Imam of Ekiti State, Sheikh Jamiu Kewulere, the organisation urged Muslims, traditional rulers, government authorities and the general public to verify the authenticity of such titles before recognising them.

The League said it had not authorised any individual, Islamic society, mosque committee or cultural organisation to confer its established regional titles without written approval from its supreme council.

It explained that the titles were historically created to recognise Muslims who had made significant contributions to Islam and the welfare of the Muslim community in Yorubaland.

The organisation also identified several titles under its institutional heritage, including Baba Adinni, Aare Musulumi, Asiwaju Adinni, Iya Adinni, Iyalode Adinni, Seriki Adinni and Balogun Adinni.

The League clarified that its statement was not directed at any particular individual and that it recognised the right of lawful organisations and traditional institutions to honour deserving people within their jurisdictions.

However, it said the use of titles associated with the League in a manner that suggests its approval or involvement was unacceptable.
