LAWMA STEPS UP ENFORCEMENT AGAINST ILLEGAL WASTE DUMPING

The Lagos Waste Management Authority has intensified enforcement against illegal waste disposal as part of efforts to clear environmental black spots and improve sanitation across the state.

The authority has been monitoring identified waste black spots and carrying out enforcement operations in areas where indiscriminate dumping remains a challenge. Recent operations on Lagos Island resulted in the arrest of 14 people over alleged waste-related offences, while several carts used by suspected unauthorised waste collectors were seized along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

The Managing Director of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the authority would continue enforcing environmental regulations and urged residents, traders and businesses to use approved waste collection channels.

He warned that illegal disposal, including dumping waste on roads, drains and waterways, could undermine the state’s waste management efforts.

LAWMA has also expanded cleanup activities across different parts of Lagos, including the evacuation of waste from identified black spots and sanitation operations in areas such as Ketu, Ikorodu, Ibeju-Lekki and Surulere.

The authority has encouraged residents to cooperate with enforcement teams and report cases of illegal dumping and unauthorised waste collection.

The intensified operations come as Lagos continues to implement measures aimed at improving waste collection and reducing the reappearance of illegal dumpsites across the state.
