The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has seized multiple waste carts and arrested a man during an early-morning enforcement operation on Lagos Island, as part of its intensified crackdown on illegal waste disposal.

According to a statement by the Lagos State Government on Facebook, the operation targeted unauthorised dumping activities in Isale-Eko at dawn. LAWMA officers intercepted the waste carts while working to prevent the re-emergence of illegal dump points in areas that had already been cleared.

A 42-year-old man, identified as Muritala Suleiman from Zamfara State, was arrested at around 1:31 a.m. for allegedly dumping waste illegally near Tinubu Square, Lagos Island.

LAWMA emphasized that early-morning surveillance is vital, as illegal dumping often occurs during periods of low visibility.

Commenting on the operation, LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said sustained enforcement is essential to protect cleaned areas from renewed abuse. “The sustained enforcement activities strengthen deterrence and protect stabilised sites from renewed abuse, as Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement operatives are strategically deployed across the state to eradicate persistent black spots and ensure sustainability along major corridors,” he said.

The authority also urged residents to adhere to approved waste disposal channels and support efforts to maintain clean public spaces.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
