LAWMA SECURES CONVICTION OF 16 ENVIRONMENTAL OFFENDERS

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has secured the conviction of 16 individuals for various environmental offences, including illegal dumping of refuse and environmental pollution.

The convictions were announced on Friday by the LAWMA Managing Director, Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni, who described the development as a major step in the authority’s enforcement drive against environmental degradation. The offenders were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment or fined by the Environmental Sanitation Court.

“These convictions send a strong message that the era of impunity in environmental offences is over. LAWMA will continue to work with the judiciary to ensure that anyone who violates environmental laws faces the full wrath of the law,” Odumboni stated.

The cases ranged from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in unauthorised locations to operating illegal waste collection points. The authority said the convictions were the result of intensified monitoring and collaboration with security agencies and the judiciary.

Environmental rights groups have welcomed the development, noting that it will serve as a deterrent to others who engage in practices that harm the environment. They called for more public sensitisation and stricter enforcement to maintain the gains.

LAWMA has also increased the number of sanitation marshals and monitoring teams to cover more areas of the state. The authority urged residents to dispose of their waste properly and make use of designated collection points and approved private operators.

The convictions come as part of a broader campaign by the Lagos State Government to improve environmental sanitation and reduce the incidence of flooding and disease outbreaks. Officials said more prosecutions are expected in the coming weeks as the authority ramps up its enforcement activities.

Residents have been advised to cooperate with LAWMA officials and report any cases of illegal dumping to the appropriate authorities to help keep Lagos clean and habitable.
