LAWMA MOVES TO STOP RECURRENT WASTE BLACKSPOTS

The Lagos Waste Management Authority has intensified efforts to tackle recurring waste blackspots across the state by combining waste evacuation with improved collection services, enforcement and community engagement.

The agency said the approach was designed to address the causes of repeated waste accumulation rather than relying only on clearing affected locations.

LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the authority was working to improve waste collection in communities around identified blackspots while strengthening enforcement against indiscriminate dumping and illegal waste collection.

In Ayobo-Ipaja, the agency has combined the evacuation of accumulated waste with enforcement against illegal waste collectors and defaulting markets and commercial facilities.

LAWMA is also deploying collection trucks to inner streets in Mushin and Odi-Olowo after clearing waste from major road medians. The move is intended to make waste collection more accessible and discourage residents from returning waste to previously cleared areas.

Gbadegesin said the agency was also introducing measures to prevent the re-dumping of waste after evacuation.

He urged residents to use approved waste collection services, report service gaps and avoid indiscriminate dumping, stressing that keeping Lagos clean required cooperation between the government, businesses and residents.
